Starting a New PTA/PTSA Unit

Form a Planning Committee.

Identify parents, schools, community & business leaders who are willing to serve on a Planning Committee. The Planning Committee elects a chair and secretary.

The Planning Committee should:

Nominate people willing to serve as PTA a president, treasurer, secretary and any vice-president(s).

Invite the community and the students' families to the organizational meeting.   Provide them with the date, time, and location of the meeting.

Organizational Meeting

(A minimum of 25 people are required for this meeting)

  First,  adopt bylaws
Second, hold an intermission so people may join the newly formed  PTA
Third, elect officers.  Only paid members vote
Fourth, apply for your Federal EIN Tax ID Number on line at  www.irs.gov.Small-Businesses-&-Self-Employed/Apply-for-an-Employer-Identification-Number
Fifth, the newly-elected president closes the meeting.
Sixth, before the officers leave the organizational meeting, the elected officers must complete form 501 (c) Application Organizing Document.  Please note that this form has to be completed in its entirety with all attachments before being approved by the MS PTA.
Seventh, as soon as possible, open a checking account. The banking institution will need your newly formed PTA’s EIN number so make sure you have already applied for it.
